Alice Speck Gallagher was born at Lexington, Nebraska, December 3, 1919, the daughter of Eugene P. and Lula Dillman Speck. She was raised at Kearney, Nebraska where she was graduated from the A. O. Thomas High School with the class of 1938. Following high school Alice attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island, Nebraska where she received her Registered Nursing Degree. She then spent one year receiving surgical nursing training at St. Louis City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Following her training she was employed in nursing in Nebraska City and Beatrice, Nebraska. On November 2, 1956, Alice was united in marriage with William Leroy Gallagher at Beatrice, Nebraska. They made their home in Denison, Iowa, where Alice was employed as a nurse at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison until retiring in 1982. Leroy died September 26, 1994 and Alice remained at their home in Denison. In May of this year Alice entered Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison where she had since resided. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Alice died early Saturday, December 15, 2007, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 88 years and 12 days. Including her parents and her husband, Alice was preceded in death by two brothers, H.H. Speck and Carl Speck. Those remaining to cherish her memory include friend, Larry Webb of Denison, two brothers, Harrison Speck of Gulfport, Mississippi and Donald Speck of North Platte, Nebraska, one sister, Angie Clough of North Platte, Nebraska, other relatives and friends. Private graveside memorial services and inurnment were held Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at the Vail Cemetery, Vail, Iowa with the Rev. Brian K. Rihner officiating. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer Association.
