Dorothy was born July 23, 1931 in Pottawattamie County, Iowa as the daughter of Don and Dorothea (Ehlers) Schultz. She graduated from Avoca High School in 1948 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls receiving her teaching certificate. She taught country school for 4 years before marrying Wilbur “Bill” Carroll on February 15, 1952 at First Lutheran Church in Avoca. Together they established their family farm, raised 4 children in Fairview township.
Dorothy was an active volunteer with several organizations including 32 years as Trinity Lutheran Church’s 3 year old classroom teacher, Shelby county fair agriculture supervisor Fairview Township secretary, Fairview Funster 4-H club leader, SCORE program secretary, a correspondent for the Avoca Journal-Herald and the Harlan Tribune. She was inducted in he Shelby County Fair Hall of Fame the same night her granddaughter was crowned Shelby County Fair Queen in 2011. She loved nature, being outdoors, parks, picnics, parades, and above all her family. Her grandchildren would compete to see how many “bless your hearts” they could receive from Grandma Carroll.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Donald and Dorothea (Ehlers) Schultz, her husband Wilbur “Bill” Carroll, her daughter Diane Roos, sister Bernice Lee and granddaughter Amy Carroll.
She is survived by children Donna (Jim) Doolittle of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Duane (Lynne) Carroll of Avoca, Iowa; Dwight Carroll of Harlan, Iowa; son-in-law Jon Roos of Polk City, Iowa; sixteen grandchildren: Ethan (Sara), Aaron (Tina), Adam (Stephanie), Sarah (Adam), Gwen, Emily (Jacob), Julie (Jason), Tom (Amy), Katie (Nick), Andrew (Alisha), Catie (Taylor), Shiloh, Jack, Mary, Everette and William; nineteen great-grandchildren: Anna, Jonah, Sophia, Micah, Elsa, Clara, Alice, Caleb, Cora, Isaac, Noah, Chavah, Aryeh, Henry, Avah, Addison, Alyssa, Lexi and Avery; brother Roy Schultz of Avoca, Iowa; sister-in-law Jeanie Klindt of Avoca, Iowa; brother-in-law Everette (Sandy) Carroll of Avoca, Iowa.
