Dorothy Allen Eggerss was born in Malvern, Iowa on April 3, 1929 to Dale and Alta Thiessen Allen. When she was 5 years old, her family moved to Avoca, where Dorothy lived her entire life. She was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church (now Trinity Lutheran), graduated first in her class from Avoca High School in 1946, and earned her elementary teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher’s College (now University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls. Dorothy married Ken Eggerss in 1948 and taught second grade in Avoca for four years before raising three children, Marty, Linda, and Patti Kay. Dorothy and Ken divorced in 1977.

In 1967, Dorothy became a postal clerk in Walnut, Iowa, and in 1977 was appointed postmaster in Marne. In 1978, she was appointed postmaster in Walnut and retired from that position in 1992. She was active in the regional postal association, helping to organize meetings and events, and making lifelong friends along the way.

Always industrious and wanting nothing to go to waste, Dorothy—from teenager to octogenarian—gathered and sold black walnuts to folks in nearly every state. Never one to be without a project in hand, Dorothy loved to sew, knit, crochet, tat—you name it, she was creating it—and enthusiastically teaching others. Although she loved to play bridge socially, she was also awarded “Silver Life Master” rank by the American Contract Bridge League and served as director of games at bridge centers in Omaha. She loved to plant flowers and spent countless hours tending her garden. She enjoyed finding treasure—if only pennies—with her metal detectors, and helped others find lost rings and other items. When daughter Linda began quilting, she took it up, too, and hand-sewed the binding to all of Linda’s quilts. She quickly embraced personal computer technology (with son Marty’s help) and soon began playing bridge online with people from around the world. Give her a challenge and she went about conquering it.

More than anything else, Dorothy loved spending time with her family, cherishing visits with them, reading to her granddaughters, playing board games with family at holiday time and traveling with family on vacations. She loved her family totally and unconditionally, and they loved her back.

Dorothy passed on Feb. 26, and is survived by her children: Marty (Carol) Eggerss of Omaha, NE; Linda Eggerss of Omaha, NE; granddaughters Jamie Eggerss (Ian McClellan) of Santa Rosa, CA; Kelly Eggerss (Aaron Sailors) of Portland, OR; siblings Charles (Laura Ann) Allen of Avoca, IA; Patricia (Robert) Rodenburg of Omaha, NE; sister-in-law Bonnie Allen of Atlantic, IA; and special family: Angela (Robert) Peterson and their children: David, John, Caroline and Joe of Woodbury, MN. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Patti Kay; her sister, LaDale Allen; and her brother, Dale Allen.
