Douglas Henry Burmeister was born May 27, 1955 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, IA to Raymond Martin Burmeister and Ina Rock Burmeister. He was raised in Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, IA, growing up and attending elementary school in Hancock, IA and graduating from AvoHa High School in 1973. After graduation, he attended Northwest Missouri State University, majored in agricultural science, and pledged Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. On April 11, 1981, Doug married Sandra Louise Green at Broadway United Methodist Church in Council Bluffs, IA. To this union two children were born; Matthew and Andrew.
Doug's passions were family, farming, and friends. These tended to blend, as he built and raised his family among the seasons and rhythm of the farm. Similarly, picnics and parties were always family events. He enjoyed embarrassing wagers on the golf course, competing on the basketball courts, softball and baseball fields, and eventually passed those lessons to the many American Legion baseball teams he coached and the AHST teams he cheered on. His passion for sports extended to cheering on his favorite teams, the Green Bay Packers, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He grew up on the farm and eventually partnered with his brother David to continue the family farm and was proud the tradition continues with nephew Jason Rold. In 2023, he was honored that the family was awarded a century farm designation. In addition to farming, Doug served as a member of the US Postal Service as a clerk for 20 years, retiring in 2021.
Doug passed away at Jennie Edmondson Memorial Hospital in Council Bluffs on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ina, mother-in-law Bonnie Green, sister-in-law Susan Green, and nephew Christopher Green.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years Sandra Burmeister; sons Matthew (Shauna) and Andrew (Angela); 4 grandchildren: Augustus, Axel, Aurora, and Alaric; sister Donna (Jerry); brother David (Kathi); father-in-law Robert Green; brother-in-law Keith Green, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and fraternity brothers.
