Hazel Eva Martin
December 20, 1922 — July 13, 2018
Hazel Martin, daughter of Jesse and Sereta (Wilson) Tolle, was born December 20, 1922 in Persia, Iowa. She attended Yorkshire Country School and graduated high school in Neola, Iowa with the class of 1940.
On February 19, 1943, Hazel was united in marriage to Glenn Keith Martin in Ralston, Nebraska. To this union, two boys were born: Byron and Bruce. Hazel and Keith made their home on the family farm west of Hancock, Iowa. She and Keith farmed together for over 55 years.
Hazel was a charter member for 65 years of the American Legion Auxiliary Post #720 of Hancock and a devout member of the Hancock United Methodist Church. She worked numerous jobs, including: assembling bomb fuses at the Jubilee Manufacturing Co. in Omaha during WWII, a cook at the Hancock Elementary School, the meat counter at the Avoca Grocery Store and as officer-in-charge at the Hancock Post Office.
Preferring the outdoors, as a new young bride Hazel taught herself how to cook. Her specialties included: biscuits and gravy, sticky cinnamon rolls, chocolate chip cookies, cream puffs with pudding and homegrown strawberry jam. Hazel had a very uplifting spirit who cared deeply for her family and friends. She made time for road trips with the girls, winter trips with Keith to Laughlin, Nevada, horse races with Bob and Mary Lou Emken, card games at her kitchen table and entertaining grandchildren at the annual Iowa State Fair.
Hazel passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa attaining the age of ninety-five years, six months and twenty-three days. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Keith Martin, son Byron Glenn Martin and his wife Janice (Wendt) Martin and siblings Woodrow (Bud) George Tolle, Elana Belle Tradel, Willard (Cap) Presley Tolle, Marjorie Ellen Bolte, Wilson Jesse Tolle, Lindley (Joe) Eugene Tolle and Edward (Mike) Tolle.
She has left to cherish her memory, her son Bruce Martin and his wife Rojeane of Hancock, Iowa; grandson Gregory Martin and his wife Christie of Shelby, Iowa; granddaughter Kimberly Martin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great-grandchildren Nicole Martin of Omaha, Nebraska; Kylie Martin of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jacob Martin of Shelby, Iowa; sister Roberta “Bobby” Nee of Avoca, Iowa; sisters-in-law Ilo Sharon and her husband Rocky of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Beverly Tolle of Kirkman, Iowa; many other relatives and friends.
