John Daniel Finerty, son of James and Eva May (Jungferman) Finerty, was born on October 25, 1928, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick�s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa, and attended St. Joseph�s Catholic School through the fourth grade. John graduated from Beebeetown High School with the class of 1946.
One February 7, 1955, John enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged on February 6, 1957, having attained the rank of Lt. Corporal.
On April 16, 1955, John was united in marriage to JoAnn Mary Ingwersen at the base chapel at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. Four daughters were born to this union: Patricia, Kathleen, Karen, and Connie. After their wedding, John and JoAnn made their home outside of Persia where John farmed. When he wasn�t busy working, John enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed watching baseball and football on the television.
John was a member of St. Patrick�s Catholic Church until 1981, when he became a member at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa.
John retired from farming in 1997, but continued to live outside of Persia.
John died on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of eighty-one years, one month, and thirteen days. He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughters Patricia and Connie; and his sister Mary Larsen.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn of Persia, Iowa; their daughters Kathleen and her husband Ron Gau of Persia and Karen and her husband Paul Waltz of Johnston, Iowa; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his son-in-law George Harman of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and his sister Betty Petratis of Council Bluffs; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, December 12, 2009, at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa, with Rev. John Dorton celebrating the 10:00 AM service. Military Rites were held at St. Patrick�s Cemetery in Neola, Iowa, by the Persia American Legion Post No. 314 and Portsmouth American Legion Post No. 547. Acting as honorary casket bearers were Ron Gau, George Harman, and Paul Waltz. Serving as casket bearers were: Matthew Harman, Rachel Harman, Nathan Harman, Amanda Gau, Alisha Gau, Adam Gau, Ryan Waltz, Kiley Waltz, Tyler Waltz, and Chelsea Waltz.
