John Michael Klein, son of John and Mary (Fromm) Klein, was born October 13, 1914 on a farm near Westphalia. His family moved to a farm north of Harlan where he grew up and attended country school. He worked on the family farm and eventually bought a portion of that farm.
On January 26, 1948 John married Isabel Heese of Earling. They remained on the farm where they raised their three children; Linda, Dan and Bob. In 1969 they retired from the farm and moved to town where he lived out the remainder of his life.
John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was known for his friendly spirit, integrity and sense of humor. His hobbies included flying airplanes, hunting, fishing, golf and others. He was most well known for his musical and entertaining abilities. John was an innovative farmer. He was active in numerous community organizations throughout his lifetime. He held several leadership positions and also served as a county supervisor.
John passed away June 2, 2019 at Elm Crest nursing home. He was 104 years old. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Isabel, son Robert, grandson Josh Klein, siblings; Anthony Klein, Josephine Book, Susan Petsche, Vitus Klein, Cecelia Gross, Lenora Arkfeld, Catherine Petsche, Joseph Klein, and Frederick Klein.
He is survived by his children, Linda and her husband Larry Clauson of Polk City, Iowa; Dan Klein of Wilmington, North Carolina; 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
Since John was the last surviving sibling he would often say " When I go I guess it'l be up to me to turn off the lights".
