Marion Iola (Fink) Vecera Thomas
Marion Iola (Fink) Vecera Thomas was born on April 2, 1918, on the family farm near Deloit, Iowa, to John Herbert Fink and Nellie (Washburn) Fink. She passed away on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 at Gracewell Assisted Living at the age of 105.
Marion lived on the farm until she was three years old, when the family moved to Denison. She graduated from Denison High School in 1936.
Marion was working at Cronks Café where she met her husband, Johnny Vecera Jr. They married in December of 1938. To this marriage three children were born, Patricia, John, and Peggy.
When Johnny died Marion volunteered at the Rust College Library in Holly Springs, Mississippi, until she married Lyle Thomas. Marion and Lyle made their home in Denison and traveled across the United States in their camper trailer during the winter months, visiting family and friends in California and Florida. They enjoyed the blended families of Marion and Lyle’s children and grandchildren. Marion loved to travel and visited Eastern Europe, Alaska, and Australia after Lyle passed away.
Marion enjoyed embroidering and quilting throughout her life. She made quilts for each of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was a longtime member of the Fireside Quilters at the United Methodist Church in Denison. She designed and made quilting blocks that replicated messages incorporated into quilts hung on clotheslines providing messages for persons using the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. She gave presentations on these blocks around Crawford County for several years. Marion was a member of the United Methodist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Red Hat Ladies Society.
Marion is survived by her three children, Patricia Kingcade, John Edward III (Margaret), and Peggy Cozad; six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She is also survived by Lyle’s son James (Kathleen) Thomas; daughter Virginia, Lyle’s four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Marion donated her body to UNMC and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
