Penny Baker Hulsebus

Penny Baker was born March 31, 1966, in Denison, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Sheila (Thompson) Baker. She grew up in Woodbine, Iowa, moving for a short period of time to Omaha, Nebraska, where she was baptized. Penny graduated from Woodbine High School. On August 5, 1995, Penny married Daryl Hulsebus at the United Methodist Church in Woodbine. Following their marriage, Daryl and Penny moved to Defiance, Iowa, where they raised four children, Tamara, Cheri, David, and JoHanna.
Penny was a lover of Tupperware, she owned multiple sets and even gifted Tupperware to her kids for Christmas. She loved puzzles and playing cards. Penny always found a way to win at card games. She loved bowling, playing darts, pool, and going camping with Daryl at Yellow Smoke Park, taking their camper to the campground many weekends throughout the year. Penny enjoyed the outdoors, she was very good at fishing and always caught the first fish and the biggest fish. She loved to socialize, everyone she spoke with left a lasting impression on her, and always ended conversations with a hug. Penny usually had her family waiting on her when departing social gatherings because she loved to give hugs to people.
For over 20 years, Penny worked at Eventide in Denison as a cook in the kitchen. The staff and residents were her second family. She always crocheted little gifts for Secret Santa at Eventide and the residents loved when she was cooking. She was always there as a listening ear and loving friend for the residents.
On Thursday, January 31, 2019, Penny gained her wings, joining her father, Martin Baker, Sr. in Heaven. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Daryl Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; children; Tamara Baker of Dunlap, Iowa; Cheri Baker of Council Bluffs, Iowa; David Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; and JoHanna Hulsebus of Defiance, Iowa; grandson, Jase Lueth of Dunlap, Iowa; mother, Sheila Baker of Dunlap, Iowa; brothers, Kenny Baker and his wife Leslie of Lebanon, Tennessee, Kevin Baker of Dunlap, Iowa, Mike Baker and his wife Sherri “Missy” of Woodbine, Iowa, Casey Baker of Dunlap, Iowa, and Martin Baker, Jr. of Dunlap, Iowa; sister-in-law, Marla Ahart and her husband Joe of Denison, Iowa; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
