Richard Charles Mulligan, son of Hugh and Dorothy (Plagman) Mulligan, was born September 7, 1946 in Harlan, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. He attended grade and high school at St. Paul’s Catholic School in Defiance. After high school, Dick served in the Army National Guard.
On April 8, 1967, Richard was united in marriage to Diane Stolz at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance. Four children were born to this union: Theresa, Shari, Richard Jr., and Andrew. Dick enjoyed farming with his father and sons over many years. He served as Vice President of the Holy Name and was on the Community Board for two years. Dick enjoyed going in early and making coffee for his friends at Kloewer Plumbing; playing cards at Tobe’s Place and spending time with his dogs. He played baseball and softball on the Defiance town teams and also enjoyed playing golf with his buddies. His grandkids and family were most important in his life.
Farming was Dick’s life until 2001 when he had a stroke. He died surrounded by his loving family at his home in Defiance on Friday, September 18, 2020, attaining the age of seventy-four years and eleven days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson Peter Fuglsang, brother James Mulligan.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Diane Mulligan of Defiance, Iowa; children Theresa Mulligan (Michael Phillips) of Omaha, Nebraska; Shari (Jim) Springman of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Rick (Michelle) Mulligan of Defiance, Iowa; Andy (Tiffany) Mulligan of Defiance, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; sister Judy (William) Stuck of Omaha, Nebraska; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
