Robert L. Allen
September 24, 1928 — January 30, 2014
Robert Louis Allen, son of Avery and Maurine (Griffith) Allen, was born September 24, 1928 on a farm one mile north of Atlantic, Iowa. His family then moved to a farm north of Walnut near the Monroe Methodist Church. He attended country school and later Walnut Schools where he graduated with the Walnut High School Class of 1946. He belonged to 4-H and raised purebred Angus Cows. He grew up playing sports and later played baseball for the Hancock and Walnut town teams.
Robert was united in marriage to Deloris J. Voss on August 12, 1950 at the Peace Church in Walnut. They were the parents of two sons: James Randall and Jan Robert. He then entered the service on February 18, 1951 and was stationed at Camp Rucker in Alabama where he served as a cook in the medical company. While in the service, Robert and Deloris made their home in Ozark, Alabama.
After his honorable discharge, Bob and Deloris returned to Iowa where they farmed southwest of Walnut. Bob belonged to the American Legion and served as commander of the Walnut AmVets. They were also members of the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut.
In 1960, he and his family moved to Long Beach, California where he worked for No American Rockwell as a production planner and later for Lucky Markets as a liquor manager.
Bob worked with the Boy Scouts for several years and joined the Tribe of Taquitz. Bob spent eighteen years working with youth at the Long Beach Los Altos Eldorado Park. He managed two youth baseball teams in Long Beach along with volunteering as an umpire and served on its board. In addition to sports, Bob enjoyed cards, dancing, fishing, cooking and traveling to their winter home in Apache Junction, Arizona.
Bob and Deloris again returned to Iowa in their retirement where Bob served on the Peace Haven Retirement Home board. Due to health, Bob then became a resident of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa. Bob died at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa on January 30, 2014 having attained the age of eighty-five years, four months and six days. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by two sisters; Mary Commenty and Jean Corey.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Deloris Allen of Walnut, Iowa; his sons: James Allen and his wife Gia of Huntington Beach, California and Jan Allen of Walnut; his grandchildren: Stephanie and Jonathan “J.J.” Allen both of Huntington Beach; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Pastor Jim Allen officiated the 1:00 PM funeral service on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. Music was provided by Sarah Kock and John Clayton. Honorary Casket Bearers were Robert Corey, Gary Sievers, Paul Kracher, Tery Gumer, Gary Liebeck, Orris Drake, Fredie Matthies, and Maynard Nielsen. Serving as casket bearers were Jonathan “J.J.” Allen, Jim Doyle, Chris Gates, Jeff Krueger, Charles Walters, and Dennis Jensen. Military Rites were performed by American Legion Post No. 422 and AmVets Post No. 45 at Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa.
