Robert Lee Meier
May 20, 1941 — May 15, 2019
Robert Lee Meier, son of Fred and Edna (Dobernecker) Meier, was born May 20, 1941 on the family farm near Persia, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Persia. He attended Persia High School, where he graduated with the class of 1959.
In February of 1964, Robert entered the US Army Reserves before serving active duty for 7 months, and then returning to the reserves to complete his 5-year term. On January 28, 1966, Robert was united in marriage to Janet Kay Best at Broadway Methodist Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They were blessed with three children: David, Kathy, and Jennifer.
Robert started out his many years of truck driving on a milk delivery route, then for Persia Milling. In 1970, the family moved to Irwin, Iowa, where he worked for over 25 years for Irwin Elevator.
Robert was always there for all his children’s activities, he especially loved attending their sporting events. His grandchildren were extremely important to him and he loved spending time playing with them. He also supported his nieces and nephews at their activities. He also participated in RAGBRAI for 15 years on team Huff Puffers.
Robert died on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 surrounded by his loving family at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, attaining the age of seventy-seven years, eleven months and twenty-five days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Lotus Martin, Fred Meier, LaVonne Springman, Ronald Meier, and Richard Meier.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Janet Meier of Irwin, Iowa; children David Meier of Irwin, Iowa; Kathy (Kevin Lingle) Freese of Manilla, Iowa; Jenni (Derrick) Clouse of Manilla, Iowa; grandchildren Alex Meier, Zachary Freese, Vanessa Freese, Joanna Freese, Anthony Meier, Caleb Clouse, Maguire Clouse, and Samuel Robert William Clouse; great grandchild Carson Robert Lee Meier; sisters Rogena Schmidt of Griswold, Iowa; Deanna (Marvin) Huebner of Persia, Iowa; sisters-in-law Mona Meier of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Gloria Meier of Tabor, Iowa; Kathy Meier of Tabor, Iowa; brother-in-law Nick Springman of Portsmouth, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
