Abbie Marie Graham was born on September 15, 1921 in Verdel, Nebraska to Warren and Elizabeth (Hans) Hunt. Her parents took care of many sick children and themselves both died as a result of a tuberculosis outbreak while Abbie was young. After the death of her parents, Abbie was adopted and raised by her aunt and uncle, Ada and Julius Erickson. She attended grade school in Verdigre, Nebraska, and graduated from Verdel High School with the Class of 1939.
On June 8, 1943, Abbie was united in marriage to David Graham in Cedar County, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Mylene, Ronda, and Alan.
While the children were growing, Abbie helped her husband on the farm near Oakland, Iowa, and later near Elk Horn, Iowa. In 1979, they purchased a home in Walnut, Iowa, where she worked for the Super 8 Motel.
After retiring from the motel, she spent time enjoying her garden, her numerous house plants, and spent many hours embroidering quilt blocks for her grandchildren. She would also solve crossword puzzles on a daily basis.
Abbie was a member of the Oakland Congregational Church and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Walnut. She was also a member of the Legion Auxiliary in Walnut for thirty years.
In May of 2008, she moved to the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center. It was there that she died on Thursday, March 4, 2010, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, five months, and seventeen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David, and a granddaughter, Shari.
She is survived by her children: Mylene and her husband Ken Riley of Walnut, Iowa, Ronda Larimore of Boone, Iowa, and Alan Graham and his wife Janet of Avoca, Iowa; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Keith Graham and his wife Sharon of Coleridge, Nebraska, sister-in-law Mary Margaraet "Maggie" DeVereaux and her husband Ray of Denver, Colorado, other family members and friends.
Rev. Merlene Ostebee conducted the 10:00 AM Memorial Service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Walnut, Iowa. Honorary casket bearers were Ryan Graham, Aaron Holtz, Jeremiah Tompson, and Stuart Weihler. Rev. Gary Kimm officiated the 3:30 PM interment at Coleridge City Cemetery in Coleridge, Nebraska
