Adeline Marie Maxwell, daughter of Chris and Olga (Christiansen) Knudsen, was born on a farm west of Jacksonville, Iowa on November 17, 1923. She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville. She and her sisters attended the country school west of Jacksonville.
Addie and Art Maxwell were married November 19, 1943 in the chapel of the Methodist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Following the wedding they headed to San Francisco, California where Art was serving in the Army in WWII.
Following the time in the Army they moved onto the Maxwell farm in Center Township where they remained until they moved to Harlan in the mid eighties. Addie stayed busy raising six kids. She was a gardener, canner, raised chickens, running errands for all the family. She was active as a 4-H leader. She also kept busy as a member of VFW Auxiliary which she joined in 1950 and became a lifetime member. She was a cook for Harlan Schools during the 80's.
Hole in One! She will be remembered at the Shelby County Golf Course for her great hit! Golf was a great pastime for her after retirement. She will also be remembered for winning the oldest pie maker many years at the Shelby County Fair when she would bring her apple pie to the fair.
Addie passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, attaining the age of one hundred years, ten months and twenty eight days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Art, daughter JoAnn Bargenquast; grandson Christian Johannsen, sisters Gladys Grabill and Arlene Christensen.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Cathy (the late Darryl) Johannsen of Harlan, Iowa; Pam (Larry) Scott of Sarcoxie, Missouri; Jon (Debbie) Maxwell of Kalispell, Montana; Julie (Tim) Hodapp of Rocky Mount, Missouri; and Mark (Kris) Maxwell of Harlan, Iowa; son-in-law, Mert Bargenquast of Shelby, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; other family members and friends.
