Agnes Ann Bintner Riesgaard was born on October 11, 1933, the daughter of Joseph and Theressa (Thielen) Bintner in Brayton, Iowa. Agnes was baptized and confirmed at Holy Trinity Church in Exira, Iowa. She graduated from Exira High School in Exira, with the class of 1951.
Agnes met Eldon Riesgaard in 1948 and was married on November 19,1951, at Holy Trinity Church in Exira. They made their home in Leon, Iowa, and attended St. Brendon Church. To this union two children were born: Charlene Sue and Monte Bruce. In 1961, the family moved to Ames and then to Avoca in 1963.
Before moving to Avoca, Agnes took care of the family being a homemaker. Then she was an Avon Lady and worked for Avoca Fabric Store until she bought Hester’s 5 & 10 Store in 1984. Upon the purchase of the store Eldon and Agnes decided to change the name to Riesgaard’s Variety. Agnes managed the store alone until Eldon’s retirement in 1991. Agnes retired in 1996, but decided to go back to work the last few years at Farmall-Land USA in Avoca.
In Agnes’s spare time, she was a very active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Avoca, serving on the church council and the Altar Society; and Cub Scouts Den Leader. Additionally, Agnes enjoyed playing cards, specifically bridge, belonging to a couple of clubs; being creative with ceramics; and going to garage sales. She was an avid collector of Hummels and dolls. Agnes and Eldon loved to travel. They went on several trips across the United States and other parts of the world. Some memorable trips were to: Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Bahamas, and Alaska. During many winters they made their home in Arizona.
In January 2017, Agnes went to live at Salem Lutheran Homes in Elk Horn, Iowa. She died on Friday, June 9, 2017, having attained eighty-three years, seven months, and twenty-nine days. She is preceded in death by her parents and brothers Wilfred and Nick Bintner.
Agnes is survived by her husband of sixty-five years Eldon Riesgaard of Avoca; daughter Charlene and her husband Larry Friederich of Avoca; son Monte Riesgaard and his wife Serena of Avoca; grandchildren Valerie Friederich of Avoca; Jason Friederich and his wife Cristina of Hillsboro, Oregon; Julian Riesgaard and his girlfriend Paige Hansen of Omaha, Nebraska; honorary grandchildren (former exchange students) Hide Kikuchi of Japan; Pierre Bendzinski of Germany; Andrew Novotny of Czech Republic; Toby Lund of Denmark; brother Arnold Bintner and his wife Lorraine of Exira; sister Ramona Johnson of Saint Cloud, Florida; sister-in-law Avis Bintner of Exira; nieces and nephews; and many friends.
