Aldene R. Winquist was born at Charter Oak, Iowa, March 1, 1925, the daughter of Carl and Anna Clausen Hollrah. She was reared on the farm at Charter Oak and graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1942. She furthered her education at Morningside College in Sioux City and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls where she received her teaching credentials. Upon completion of her education she was employed at Iowa Public Service in Charter Oak.On March 13, 1949, Aldene was united in marriage with John W. Winquist at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three sons: Steve, Alan and David. They made their home on the farm at Kiron where they raised their family. In addition to being a busy farmwife and mother, Aldene taught rural school in Stockholm Township for nine years and worked in the Kiron School Library for three years. In the fall of 1977, they moved to Sac City, Iowa where Aldene worked in the Sac City Middle School Library for three years and the Public Library for five years from which she retired in 1986. Following retirement, John and Aldene returned to Kiron in 1992.In her leisure time she enjoyed traveling, reading, sewing, gardening, cooking and art.Aldene was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kiron where she was a Sunday school teacher for 26 years, a Christian Board of Education member and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.John died November 23, 1997, and Aldene remained at home in Kiron until moving to Real Life in Denison in 2000. In 2012 she moved to the Reed House in Denison and, following her stroke, she entered Eventide Lutheran Home in September of 2013.Aldene died at Eventide Friday morning, May 20, 2016. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 91 years, 2 months and 19 days.Including her parents Carl and Anna Hollrah, Aldene was also preceded in death by her husband John, twin grandchildren, Nolan John and Anna Roene Winquist, two brothers: Leland and Vernon Hollrah; brothers-in-law: John Mundt, Freeman Meyer and Dwight Winquist and sisters-in-law JoAnn Hollrah and Mildred Winquist Cooper.Those remaining to cherish her memory include her sons: Steve (Jana) Winquist of Kiron, Iowa, Alan Winquist (Donna) of Rosemount, Minnesota, and David Winquist of Chanhassen, Minnesota; 1 grandson, Kirby Winquist of Kiron, Iowa; brother, Don Hollrah of Omaha, Nebraska; sister, Evelyn Meyer of Hemet, California; sisters-in-law: Leona Hollrah of Denison, Iowa and Beverly Winquist of Ida Grove, Iowa; other relatives and friends.Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa with Pastor Bruce Kaihoi officiating. Congregational hymns were a processional “Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us” and a recessional of “I Love To Tell the Story” and a solo by Jane Gronau of “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” with Sue Kaihoi serving as accompanist. Honorary Pallbearers were Colleen Jones, Jane Lafleur, Lyle Woodward, Dwain Swensen, Anitra Koski, Julie Petersen, and JoNel Mundt and Pallbearers were Kent Hollrah, Dean Hollrah, Steve Nelson, Darwin Petersen, Dennis Youngquist, and Stan Winquist. Interment was at the Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Following the graveside rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the church for fellowship and a luncheon catered by Staley’s and the First Baptist Social Committee.
