Alfred Paul Leinen was born Sept. 23rd, 1928, the son of Nicholas and Agnes (Kenkel) Leinen. He was raised on a family farm west of Earling. He attended St. Joseph's school in Earling until the 8th grade. After school he worked on the family farm with his dad until joining the Army in Dec of 1952. In July of 1957, Alfred married his sweetheart, Joan Schmidt, of Portsmouth. Alfred and Joan had nine children, four boys & five girls. Raising this many children required a lot of hard work and a lot of money. Alfred raised hogs which were sourced through Mosquito Valley Pork, a corporation that he was a part of, which was started in 1989. Alfred sold feed for Moormans for over 29 years.
Alfred did find time to enjoy the many things in life that made him happy. He and Joan traveled a lot through work and family. They did a lot of dancing (and were extremely good at it), and loved going to the Casino. Alfred stayed very active with the kids, when he wasn't putting them to work. He coached his girls' CYO softball team. He took the kids fishing, golfing, and attended a lot of sporting events. Alfred and Joan enjoyed taking the family camping. He had a passion for going out to eat, playing bingo, pool, going bowling, and rooting for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the St. Louis Cardinals. Most of all, Alfred loved his family and friends. He simply loved Life.
Alfred passed away on September 12, 2017. He had enjoyed almost 89 years of his life at home with his family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, LaVern Leinen, Leo Leinen, Cecelia Buckley, Irene Mahlberg, Nicholas Leinen Jr., Marcella "Sally" Dullemuth, RoseMary Rehberg, and Edward Leinen.
