Alfred J. Pauley was born December 13, 1935 in Panama, Iowa. He was the fifth child of Leo & Louise (Schmitz) Pauley. Alfred was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's of the Assumption Catholic church. He attended St. Mary's elementary school through high school. After schooling he joined the United States Army in 1957 and proudly served in Korea until 1958. He was honorably discharged.
After he returned from Korea he worked for Bill Goetz in Panama and John Cane in Dunlap. In September of 1965, he started working for Panama Transfer where he was a dedicated employee. He traveled many miles over southwest Iowa and Omaha delivering freight to many customers that became lifelong friends. After almost 50 years of driving he transitioned into working in the warehouse until his retirement on December 13, 2013.
Over the years, he served on St. Mary's Parish council and Panama town council. He was a member of the Panama Fire Department and a lifelong member of St. Mary's Parish.
Family was important to Alfred. Four children were born from his first marriage: Jerry, Scott, Barb, and Bruce. In 1970, he met Prune Hicklin and was married on June 21, 1972 in Crested Butte, Colorado. From this union, 5 children were born: Tony, Tracie, Trina, Trent, and Toby.
Alfred and Prune made their home in Panama until her passing in May 2023 after almost 51 years of marriage. In June 2023, Alfred made his home at Elm Crest Retirement Community until his passing at the age of 88.
Alfred enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He liked going to the horse races and to the casino. He loved a nice cold frosty mug, playing video slots, and opening pickle cards.
In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by his wife, Prune; sisters: Lucille, Bernadine, Mitz, Thelma, and Janice; brothers: Walter and Gerald; Daughter in law, Peggy; and granddaughter, Rebecca.
He is survived by his children: Jerry Pauley, Scott Pauley, Barb (Gary) Leinen all of Panama; Bruce (Kris) Pauley of Woodbine; Tony (Niki) Pauley of Newton; Tracie (Corey) Freund of Panama; Trina (Joel) Jacobsen of Shelby; Trent (Sheri) Pauley of Council Bluffs; and Toby (Heather) Pauley of Harlan; 22 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren; brother: Kenny Pauley of Panama; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
In lieu of flowers family suggested memorials be made to Panama Volunteer Fire Department.
