Alice Agatha (Schulte) Carey was born February 5, 1923 in Westphalia, Iowa to William and Anna (Rosenthal) Schulte. Her Dad baptized her and named her as she was born on the feast of St. Agatha. She made her first communion and was confirmed at St. Boniface Church in Westphalia and attended St. Boniface grade school and freshman year there. She lived there with her family who operated the grocery and general store for many years until the move to Earling in 1937. She graduated from St. Joseph's High School class of 1940 where she excelled in her studies.
On June 28, 1945, Alice was united in marriage to Philip Carey at St. Joseph's church in Earling and became a "farmer's wife". To this union, five children were born. Phil was in partnership with his father on the family farm 7 miles west of Panama. They moved to the farm in 1951 and purchased it in 1970. Alice was actively involved in the farm work, especially the dairy operation.
Alice was an active member of St Mary's Parish in Panama serving on the parish council; lector; CCD teacher and organized the altar boys scheduling for 13 years. Along with her husband, she was a political activist focusing on the rights of farmers.
They moved to Harlan in 1993 and became members of St. Michael's Church. With their retirement, she had more time for the things she enjoyed including card playing, Bible Study, travel and cooking for visitors. She loved family reunions, neighbors and grandkids.
Alice was a caregiver for Phil in his long fight with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Phil; a son John Patrick; 2 infant brothers, Lawrence and Raymond; brothers John and Howard Schulte; five sisters Francis Irwin, Josephine Kwapiszeski, Ellen Stoll, Helen Carey, Bernice Feser and Aggie Gaul.
Survivors include her children Daniel and his wife Terri of Sun City West, Arizona, Jane and husband Steve Arnaud of Spring Hill, Florida, Michael and wife Karen of East Hampton, CT, Robert of Harlan IA. Seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; one brother, Paul Schulte and wife Aggie of Carroll and sister Theresa Blum plus many relatives and friends.
