Alice Jane Clemsen, daughter of Thomas Lee and Alta Grace (Plumb) Evans, was born on February 16, 1921 in Osceola County, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed on March 25, 1945, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. She attended Harlan High School in Harlan, Iowa, and was a member of the graduating class of 1940.
On June 2, 1943, Jane was united in marriage to Russell M. Clemsen. Three children were born to this union: Adyline Marie, Byron Dean, and Beverly Alta. After their wedding, Jane and Russell farmed in Audubon County and Sharon Township until Russell’s death in September 1985. Jane continued to farm until 1989, when she moved into Harlan.
As Jane’s health declined, she moved to Kearney, Missouri, to be closer to her daughter. Her last years were spent at the Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center.
It was there that Jane died on Monday, March 30, 2009, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, one month, and fourteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Russell; her sisters Arlene Nelson and Dexter Sorensen; and her brothers Gerald Evans and Eddie Evans.
She is survived by her children: Adyline and her husband Steve Christensen of Kearney, Missouri; Byron and his wife Holly Clemsen and Beverly Clemsen all of Alexandria, Virginia; five grandchildren: Gwendolyn and her husband Curtis Mayes; Jennifer and her husband Chris Skiba; Nanette and her husband Stacy Stout; Alyssa Clemsen and her husband Tom Roberts; and Alex Clemsen; eight great-grandchildren: Gretchen, Jensen, Caroline, TJ, Jack, Delany, Brock, and Zoey; her sister Grace Ann Knudsen of Harlan, Iowa; her sister-in-law Lucille Evans; nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.
The family has asked the memorials be directed to: Bethany Lutheran Church Youth in Kimballton, Iowa or the CG Therkildsen Center in Harlan, Iowa.
Funeral Services were held on Friday, April 3, 2009, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kimballton, Iowa. Pastor Tony Ede officiated the 11:00 AM service. Burial was held at Bethany Cemetery in Kimballton with TJ Skiba, Jack Skiba, Brock Stout, and Jensen Mayes acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were: Alex Clemsen, Christopher Skiba, Curtis Mayes, Stacy Stout, Thomas Roberts, and Stan Knudsen.
