Alice Mary Fahn, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Kenkel) Schiltz, was born on March 21, 1918, in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and graduated from St. Boniface Catholic Schools in Westphalia, Iowa, with the class of 1936.
On January 23, 1941, Alice was united in marriage to Leonard Joseph Fahn at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Eleven children were born to this union: Duane, Pat, Yvonne, Edna, Joann, Kenneth, Keith, Mary, Peg, Randy, and Jane. After their wedding, Alice and Leonard made their home in the Defiance area where they farmed until 1954 when they moved to a farm near Harlan. After Leonard retired from farming in 1975, the couple moved into Harlan.
Alice loved her family and cherished the time she spent with them, especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She could often be found in the kitchen cooking or baking bread and goodies for the grandchildren. She enjoyed being outside in her garden and watching the wildlife in her back yard. She also enjoyed playing cards and bowling. Alice and Leonard were able to spend 15 years wintering in Arizona and Texas.
Alice died on Thursday, April 23, 2009, at her home, having attained the age of ninety-one years, one month, and two days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Leonard; her great-grandson Luke Kenkel; her sister Edna and her brother Walter Schiltz.
She is survived by her children: Duane Fahn and his wife Karen of Harlan, Iowa; Pat and her husband Damian Kenkel of Panama, Iowa; Yvonne and her husband David Krueger of Omaha, Nebraska; Edna and her husband Ron Odendahl of Manning, Iowa; Joann and her husband Larry Mayes of Renton, Washington; Kenneth Fahn and his wife Stacey of Harlan, Iowa; Keith Fahn and his wife Deb of Carroll, Iowa; Mary and her husband Dan D�Arcy of Harlan, Iowa; Peg Thrasher and her special friend John Heithoff; Randy Fahn and his wife Cindy; Jane and her husband Eric Rogers all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; twenty-nine grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; her sister Ruth and her husband Jim Schaben of Dunlap, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, April 27, 2009, at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrated the 11:00 AM service. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan with Kenton Krueger, Steve Odendahl, Douglas Fahn, John Mayes, Kristie Schaben, Stacie Mullen, Elizabeth Morisch, Leah Thrasher, Sadie Fahn, Stephanie Watrous, and Brandy Mayes acting as honorary casket bearers. Serving as casket bearers were: Ben Fahn, Paul Odendahl, Jake Fahn, Curtis Krueger, Rodney Kenkel, Zachary Fahn, Chad Kenkel, and Brad Smith.
