Alice Eileen Moon
July 8, 1912 — November 22, 2014
Alice Eileen (Sheeley) Moon, daughter of Lisbon and Almira Sheeley was born on July 8, 1912 in Fiscus, Iowa. She attended school in Irwin, Iowa through the 5th grade and then attended school in Harlan, Iowa. Alice graduated Harlan High School in 1930.
Following High School she was employed as a waitress at the Saylor Hotel Restaurant, Harlan Roller Mill, Farners and Wiigs 5¢ to $1.00 Store. It was there that she met Dale O. Moon who was managing Wiig’s Store. Alice and Dale were married in South Omaha on October 11, 1934 in the Baptist Church. Dale was employed at Sears & Roebuck in Omaha. Two sons were born to this union. Ronald in 1935 and Larry in 1941.
In 1942, Dale accepted a management position with Ben Franklin Variety Store in Winterset, Iowa and Alice worked in that store as well. In 1946, Alice and Dale opened Moons 5¢ and $1.00 Store in Beresford, South Dakota. In 1952, they sold their store in Beresford and purchased Wiig’s Store in Harlan where she also worked.
Dale suffered a severe stroke in the fall of 1960. Alice sold the Harlan store and opened her own Mode O’ Day ladies apparel in Winterset, Iowa. Mode O’ Day Company offered her a management position in a company store in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. After a few years the same company offered her the management position for another of their stores, Three Sisters, in Norfolk, Nebraska. This was followed by another advancement as manager of the company’s Jean Nicolle store in Dubuque, Iowa.
Alice and Dale retired in Harlan. Alice continued to work as a bookkeeper in Moon Printing and Publishing business, owned by Ron and Carol Moon, her son and daughter in law. Alice tried to retire again, but worked part time for the Fourth Generation, Present Trends, Anderson Clothing and Farners.
Alice had a great sense of humor. Her hobby and passion was cooking and she loved to entertain in her home.
Alice Moon died on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at the Avoca Nursing Rehab Center at the age of 102 years, 4 months and 14 days. She was preceded in death by her parents; two half brothers, Harry Sheley and Basil Sheley; two half sisters, Vera Jensen and Merle Buthman; three sisters, Vivian Huber, Mildred Burton, and Velma Wilcox; and her husband of 45 years Dale O. Moon.
Alice is survived by her two sons, Ronald D Moon and his wife Carol of Harlan, Iowa and Larry R. Moon of Chicago, Illinios; 5 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
