Alice Jane Schueman was born on February 11, 1930 in Avoca, Iowa to Merle and Mae (Fish) Pope. She was one of seven children in the family. At a young age, she met Walter Schueman and, not a month after Alice turned age 18, the two were united in marriage in Hiawatha, Kansas. Five children were born to this union: Jane, Dolores, Rita, Bobbie and Ruby.
Alice stayed at home with the children until the last of them started school. She then began working at various jobs in the Avoca and Oakland area including: the Avoca Nursing Home, Oakland Beef Plant, Jacks in Oakland, and Sportsmans in Avoca. She also worked as a cook at Heritage in Avoca for many years until her retirement. After her retirement, she began working at Super Foods in Avoca.
Alice loved traveling with friends and spending summer vacations with family. She enjoyed gardening and plants, especially Aloe Vera plants. She was always splitting them and giving them out to friends and family. In more recent years, Alice spent time reading through the classifieds in the local papers, listening to funeral announcements on the radio, and keeping up with the current events.
Alice died on Friday, February 15, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa having attained the age of 83 years and 4 days. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; a son, Bobbie; a daughter, Ruby; her brothers: Edward, Bill "Lumpy", Amasa "Hammer", and Clarence "Punk"; and a sister Shirley Madden.
She is survived by three daughters: Jane and her husband Ray Olsen, Dolores and her husband Jim Rinehart, and Rita and her husband Steve Osbahr, all of Avoca, Iowa; nine grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; a brother, Claude "Tuffy" Pope and his wife Karen of Avoca; sisters-in-law, Diane Pope of Avoca, and Jo Ann Hansen of Atlantic, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
Pastor Eric Meissner officiated the 10:00 am funeral service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca, Iowa on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Accompanist was Shirley Pattee and vocalist was Ann Johnk. Burial was held in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca with TJ Dargin, Duane Friend, Derek Olsen, Travis Hargens, Mark Paulsen, and Bryan Simonsen serving as casket bearers.
