Alma Marie Mathiasen was born on August 26, 1919, to Hans and Elsie (Petersen) Christensen in Audubon County, Iowa. She attended country school in the Poplar, Iowa, area. On March 2, 1937, she was united in marriage to George Mathiasen in Atlantic, Iowa. Two children were born to this union: Janis and Darrel.
Alma was a good farm wife; able to do handy work around the farm but she was best known for her cooking and for her lemon, butterscotch, and chocolate pies. She collected cookbooks and loved to share her talent with others.
She was a good musician and played for dances in Poplar, Hamlin, and Jacksonville. She enjoyed playing card games with her friends and tending to her flowers.
The family took many vacations and she couldn�t pass up an opportunity to watch her Chicago Cubs. She put in many hours volunteering for various community drives and helping with different organizations. She loved to spend time with her five grandchildren and delighted in her six great-grandchildren.
Alma became a resident of Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan in October of 2007 and it was there that she died on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, six months, and seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Leona.
Alma is survived by her husband George Mathiasen of Harlan, Iowa; her children Janis and her husband Roger Luoma of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Darrel Mathiasen and his wife Sharon of Harlan; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sister Vernal Henriksen of Harlan; nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on Saturday, March 8, 2008, with Pastor Heather Ploen leading the 10:30 AM service at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Casket bearers were Kirk Jacobsen, Jeff Lansman, Doug Robinson, Rod Owens, Fred Nelson, and Ryan Krall. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery in Harlan, Iowa.
