Alvin Jensen
January 21, 1913 — January 12, 2007
Wilson Alvin Jensen, the son of Jens and Jennie Damgaard Jensen, was born on January 21,1913 in Shelby, Iowa. Alvin and his siblings grew up on his grandfather Jensen's farm northeast of Shelby. He was baptized in the Danish Lutheran Church and later confirmed in the United Lutheran Church in Shelby. Alvin attended country school and Shelby Community School until the 11th grade. After his schooling Alvin worked at many farm jobs before he joined the Navy and served from 1936 until 1940 and was stationed on the Battleship Colorado during that time. He was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Second Class Petty Officer.
Alvin was united in marriage to Elma Mary Rohrs on February 10, 1950 in Council Bluffs, Iowa. In the spring of 1952 they moved to the Rohrs family farm with heir new son, Robert A. Jensen. Alvin, Elma and Robert have had the honor of their farm being recognized as one of the Century Farms of the State of Iowa. Alvin retired at the age of 68 but remained active helping Robert and planted his last crop in 2003. Alvin was a big fan of Iowa State University sports, he enjoyed mowing his lawn and reading.
Alvin died at his home on Friday, January 12, 2007 having attained the age of ninety-three years, eleven months and three days, nine days short of his 94th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elma, one brother Jens Jensen and sister Frances Johansen.
Survivors include his son, Robert Jensen of Shelby, Iowa; his brothers: Leonard Jensen of Hemet, California; Marlin Jensen and his wife Pernilla of Oakland, Nebraska; sisters-in-law: Helen Gaynor of Fullerton, California and Joan Jensen of Bloomfield, Nebraska; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Shelby Lutheran Church in Shelby, Iowa with Pastor Duane Anunson as the clergy. Serving as pall bearers were Paul Wise, Gerald Buck, Larry Johansen, Duane Johnson, Vern Bauer and Gene Wahling. Interment was held in the Shelby Cemetery, Shelby, Iowa.
