Ambrose Muenchrath was born on January 29, 1914, to Henry and Dora (Goeser) Muenchrath on the family farm near Earling, Iowa in Union Township. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling. He attended school through the eighth grade at St. Joseph�s Catholic School and received his GED from Harlan High School.
He was united in marriage on 1935 to Erma Coenen. Four children were born to this union: Lois, John, Linda, and Robert. They lived on the farm until moving into Earling in 1965.
In 1961, Ambrose was appointed by Secretary of Agriculture Freeman to the state advisory committee for F. H. A. He also served as county committee man for three years. In 1965, he was appointed by Governor Harold Hughes to the Iowa Water Pollution Control Commission for four years.
He also served on the Shelby County Board of Education, the Catholic Charities board, and was a member of Myrtue Memorial Hospital board of trustees for seven and a half years.
Ambrose died on Monday, September 13, 2010, at Elm Crest Retirement Community, having attained the age of ninety-six years, seven months, and fifteen days. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Erma and second wife Marie Dorothy, granddaughter Michelle Neville; great-grandson Chris Neville; brothers: Silverius, Michael, and Ivo, and sisters: Loretta and Veronica.
He is survived by his children: Lois and her husband Bill Berberich of Destin, Florida, Linda and her husband Edwin Buman of Harlan, Iowa, John Muenchrath and his wife Mary of Coos Bay, Oregon, and Robert Muenchrath and his wife Dianna of West Des Moines, Iowa; twelve grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Ann Muenchrath of Omaha, Nebraska and Rita and her husband James Smith of Omaha; brother Fred Muenchrath and his wife Gay of Wichita, Kansas; other family members and friends.
The 11:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Chris Fontanini and concelebrated by Rev. David Muenchrath on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at St. Joseph�s Catholic Church in Earling, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Rob Muenchrath, Bill Berberich, Jr., Steve Berberich, Sarah Devine, Dennis Neville, and Gwen Booth. Private interment was held at St. Joseph�s Cemetery in Earling.
