Anabelle Petersen was born on June 8, 1918 to J. L. And Anna (Larson) Maxwell on a farm in Center Township in rural Harlan, Iowa. She attended Center Township #1 through eighth grade and graduated with the Class of 1936 from Harlan High School. She received her normal training and became a teacher, teaching at a country school near Harlan.
On June 1, 1941, Anabelle was united in marriage to Raymond Petersen in Omaha, Nebraska. Four children were born to this union: Beverly, Marlene, Ron, and Lamond.
Anabelle kept busy raising her family. When the children were older, she worked at Ben Franklin�s for a couple years. She also enjoyed her hobbies of quilting and crocheting. She was also very interested in history and geneology and was a member of the Geneology Society and the Shelby County Historical Society, running the Society�s booth at the fair for several years. In1995, she was inducted into the Shelby County Fair Hall of Fame.
Anabelle was also an active member of the Red Hat Society, Rebecca Lodge, and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her and Raymond were members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jacksonville for several years.
Anabelle died on Thursday, August 9, 2007, having attained the age of eighty-nine years, two months, and one day. She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Lamond, her brother John Maxwell, and her sister Daisy Stepp.
She is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Raymond Petersen of Harlan, Iowa; her son Ron Petersen of Kimballton, Iowa; her daughters Beverly Cox and Marlene Wahl; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; her brother Art Maxwell and his wife Adeline of Harlan; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
A funeral service was held on Monday, August 13, 2007, at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan. Pastor Ron Rasmussen officiated the 1:30 PM service. Serving as casket bearers were Ron Petersen, Devin Townsend, Tanner Wahl, Brian Wahl, Loren Wahl, and Troy Wahl. Interment was at the Jacksonville Cemetery in Jacksonville, Iowa.
