Andrew John Pauley, son of Hubert and Anna (Mickels) Pauley was born on August 4, 1913, near Panama, Iowa. He was the sixth child born of eleven. Andrew was baptized at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. He received his first communion and was confirmed at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama.
He attended grade school in Panama until the eighth grade and then he took a test to receive his high school equivalent diploma in Harlan. In 1937 he attended Barber school in Sioux City, Iowa, where he received his license to barber. Andrew practiced barbering in Harlan, Avoca, Iowa, and Onawa, Iowa, before starting to farm in 1943.
On April 22, 1954, he was united in marriage to Grace Schoemann at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Seven children were born to this union: Melinda, Denice, Kris, Doug, Danny, Pat, and Julie. After their marriage, Andrew continued farming until he retired in 1989.
Some of Andrew�s hobbies included square dancing, woodworking, gardening, fishing, playing cards, and most importantly, spending time with his family.
Andrew died at his home on Thursday, July 1, 2010, having attained the age of ninety-six years, ten months, and twenty-seven days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sisters, Martina and Martha, sisters Mary Ann Weis and Sally Schmitz; six brothers: Walter, Fred, Leo, Albert, Zeno, and Ralph, his sister-in-laws Louise Pauley, Vera Pauley, and Cyrilla Pauley; brother-in-laws S.H. Bud Weis and Nicholas Schmitz, and two grandchildren: Allison Kreher and Angel Pauley.
Andrew is survived by his wife Grace of Panama, his seven children: Melinda and her husband Dale Kreher of Omaha, Nebraska, Denice and her husband Steve Nie of Jesup, Iowa, Kris and her husband Jerry Hermsen of Dubuque, Iowa, Doug Pauley and his wife Joan of Columbus, Nebraska, Dan Pauley and his wife Alicia of Coon Rapids, Iowa, Pat Pauley and his wife Sandy of Honey Creek, Iowa, and Julie and her husband Guyle Sonderman of Portsmouth, Iowa; twenty-six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Veronica Pauley of Woodbine, Iowa; nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Bob Schoemann and Concelebrated by Rev. John Dorton on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 10:30 AM and was held at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Jerry Hermsen, Guyle Sonderman, Doug Pauley, Danny Pauley, Pat Pauley, Dale Kreher, and Steve Nie. Interment was held at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Panama.
