Anita M. Hammer was born October 24, 1930, in Manilla, Iowa, the daughter of Sears and Anna Segebart Poleske. She was baptized in Christ and later confirmed her faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. She attended the Manilla school and graduated with the class of 1949. After graduation, Anita attended Waldorf Jr. College and graduated in 1951 with her teaching certificate. She went on to further her education by graduating from Drake College in 1961 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Anita’s first teaching job was at Crawford County School in Jackson Township. She went on to teach in Westside, Atlantic, and Denison Public and Lutheran Schools.
Anita was united in marriage to Louie Hammer on June 16, 1963 at Zion Lutheran Chapel in Denison. The couple made their home in Denison and were blessed with two daughters: Rebecca and Barbara.
Along with being a teacher for many years, Anita later worked at Alco Discount store for 14 years and retired from there in 1993. She was a member of Xi Beta Omega since 1957 and held offices of President, Secretary and Treasurer and later joined the Retired Teachers group. Anita was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and was active in Women’s Guild and AAUW. She attended Bible classes and helped with teaching Sunday School. She loved quilting and also stayed busy doing crafts and counted cross stitch. Anita was a gentle, kind lady and loved her family deeply. She enjoyed spending time with her daughters and grandchildren.
Anita passed away early Wednesday morning, September 5, 2018, at the Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 10 months and 12 days. Preceding Anita in death were her parents, her husband Louie in 1988, and her sister Ruth Rosburg. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Becky and husband Dave Steinbach of La Vista, Nebraska and Barb McKillip of Denison, Iowa; grandchildren: Nathaniel, Natalie and Emily Steinbach, and Lily, Binnie and Sidnie McKillip; brother Lee Poleske of Seward, Alaska; other relatives and friends.
