Anna Marie Arkfeld was born on December 6, 1922 to Henry and Anna (Walters) Schmieding on the family farm near Panama, Iowa. She was baptized at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama and received her Holy Communion and was confirmed at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa. She attended country school in Dunlap, Iowa.

On January 10, 1944, Anna Marie was united in marriage to Clarence Arkfeld at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dunlap, Iowa. They became parents to nine children: Robert, Delores, Ron, Gerald, Dennis, Dave, Joe, Mary Lee, and Mark. They farmed for fifty years in the Defiance area. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers. She loved to crochet and made over sixty afghans that she gave to her family and friends. She also enjoyed bowling, playing cards, especially pitch, and square dancing and ballroom dancing. Everyone loved her cooking but her favorite thing was making her “famous pecan rolls” for family, friends, and her grandchildren.

Anna Marie’s faith was very important to her and she was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Katherine No. 266 of Earling, Iowa.

After her husband’s death in 2003, she continued to live in Harlan until September of 2010 when she became a resident of Avoca Assisted Living.
