Anna Mary Blum was born on May 1, 1921 to Peter and Anna (Schechinger) Muell in Merrill, Iowa. She was baptized at Assumption of St. Joseph in Merrill, Iowa and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama, Iowa. Anna Mary attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Panama and graduated with the Class of 1939.
On May 26, 1942, she was united in marriage to Cecil Blum, Sr. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Eleven children were born to this union: Terrance, Garry, Cecil Jr., Cheryl, Anna, Candi, Colleen, Rosalie, Michelle, Rhonda, and Bryan.
Anna was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, books, and was also a gifted writer. In May of 2001, she put together a family cookbook and included several of her original poems. She liked to research genealogy and create scrapbooks. Her family was very important to her and she loved to visit with her grandchildren. She never forgot a birthday and you could always count on getting a card from her.
She was known for her flower garden and her house was known as Blum’s Corner. She liked baking, reading, writing, quilting, and making popcorn balls at Christmas time for her family.
Anna was still living on the family farm when she died on Monday, June 9, 2014 at the age of ninety-three years, one month, and eight days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cecil, son Terrance, daughter Rosalie, brothers: Kenneth, Ralph, and Gerald; sister Rose Ann Munsel; and son-in-law Joseph Cowan.
She is survived by her children: Garry Blum and his wife Michelle of Harlan, Iowa, Cecil Blum, Jr. and his wife Shawn of Denison, Iowa, Cheryl and her husband Richard Bockelmann of Denison, Iowa, Anna and her husband Harris Miller of Urbandale, Iowa, Candi and her husband Richard DeCarlo of Harlan, Iowa, Colleen and her husband Kevin Kenkel of Earling, Iowa, Michelle Cowan and her fiancé Steve Schroeder of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Rhonda and her husband Rick Ketelsen of Denison, Iowa, and Bryan Blum and his wife Brenda of Harlan, Iowa; twenty-four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; sister Nadine and her husband Dr. Michael Scott of Seattle, Washington; daughter-in-law Karen Blum of Harlan, Iowa; sisters-in-law Helen and her husband Chuck Hanson of Moorhead, Iowa, Nancy Blum of Anoka, Minnesota, Marie Blum of Earling, Iowa, Alma Blume of Fonda, Iowa, and Nancy Mell of Surprise, Arizona; other family members and friends.
