Anna Marie Dethmann was born on the farm south of Denison, Iowa, November 4, 1913, the daughter of William and Christina Atler Kruthoff. She was received into God’s Kingdom through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism June 13, 1914 at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed in her Christian Faith there April 4, 1926. Anna was raised on the farm and received her early education in the rural schools before graduating from Denison High School with the class of 1930. Following high school she taught in the rural schools of Crawford County from 1931 until 1941. On November 10, 1940, Anna was united in marriage with Wernes Paul Dethmann in Denison and their union was blessed with three children, Wernes “Dutch”, Diane and Paul. They made their home in Denison where Anna spent the early years of their marriage as a homemaker raising their family. In February of 1962 Anna began employment at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison from which she retired as Dietary Supervisor November 1, 1978. She spent her retirement years in Denison where she enjoyed her hobbies of flower gardening, crocheting, quilting, fishing, baking and cooking. Her happiest moments in life were the times spent with her family. Anna was a lifetime and active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Zion Ladies Aid and Evening Guild. Other memberships she enjoyed include: American Legion Auxiliary; Rural Letter Carrier Auxiliary; Eventide Auxiliary; Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and their Tele-Care Committee; and the Crawford County Historical Society. In 2005, Anna moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison and it was there her death occurred Friday, April 30, 2010. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 96 years, 5 months and 26 days. Including her parents, Anna was also preceded in death by her husband: Wernes Dethmann, March 5, 1997; one son: Paul Dethmann, October 23, 2001; four brothers: John C., Conrad L., Raymond C., and Walter M. Kruthoff; one sister: Elizabeth Lueck; sister-in-law: Marie Kruthoff; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Roy and Marjorie Dethmann. Those remaining to cherish her memory include one son: Wernes “Dutch” (Ruby) Dethmann of San Antonio, TX; one daughter: Diane DeKok of Sioux City, IA; three grandchildren: Amie (Martin) Millard of Sioux City, IA; Erich (Priscilla) Dethmann of Austin, TX; and Kevin Page of Tallahassee, FL; three great grandchildren: Josie DeKok of Sioux City, IA; Peyton and Mackenzie Millard of Alma, NE; brother-in-law: Leonard (Emily) Klink of Denison, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 4, 2010, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, IA with the Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser officiating. Music for the service included the congregational hymns of “How Great Thou Art”, “Beautiful Savior”, “On Eagles Wings” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives” with Karen Kahl serving as organist. Pallbearers were Kevin Page, Erich Dethmann, Priscilla Dethmann, Amie Millard, Martin Millard, Bernhard Petersen, Irwin Denker and Merlin Christiansen. Interment was at Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Following the interment the family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and a meal prepared and served by Hy-Vee and the Zion Ladies Aid.
