Anna Mae Leuschen, daughter of Joe and Mayme (Kobold) Blum was born April 14, 1919 in Earling, Iowa. She was baptized, received her First Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School where she graduated with the class of 1937.
In the summer of 1937, Anna Mae attended Normal Training School in Denison, Iowa and received her elementary teaching certificate. She taught in rural schools around Shelby County for five years before her marriage.
On June 2, 1943, Anna Mae was united in marriage to Urban Leuschen at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union, Tom and Nick. She lived in Texas while Urban served in the military until January of 1944 when he was sent overseas. She returned to Harlan until Urban was discharged on June 15, 1945. On March 26, 1946, they began farming one mile west of Panama, Iowa. They lived there until 1972.
The fall of 1968 after her son Nick’s graduation, Anna Mae continued her education and taught for 15 years at St. Joseph’s School in Earling. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Panama and served on the Altar Society. In February of 1982, they moved to Harlan, where she became a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.
Anna Mae died on Friday, May 24, 2019 at Elm Crest Retirement Home in Harlan, Iowa, attaining the age of one hundred years, one month and ten days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Urban Leuschen, sons Tom Leuschen and Nick Leuschen, brothers Kenneth Blum, William Blum, Cecil Blum, sisters Leonarda Miller, Lillian Stinn, and Mary Blum.
She is survived by her brother Joseph Blum of Blacksburg, Virginia; sister Agnes Camery of Le Sueur, Minnesota; daughters-in-law Kathy (Mike) Leuschen-Laumann of Flower Mound, Texas; Barb Leuschen of Lincoln, Nebraska; 6 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, other family members and friends.
