Anna Rose Schmieding, daughter of John and Mary (Majerus) Wirtz, was born on February 9, 1917, in Defiance, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Defiance, Iowa, and attended school in Defiance, Earling, and Panama.
On November 23, 1937, Anna was united in marriage to Peter Schmieding in Panama, Iowa. To this union six children were born: Peter, Sr. Mary Ann, Francis, Cyril, Bill, and Michael. A seventh child was a stillborn. After their wedding, the couple farmed outside of Westphalia for twenty-five years before moving to Harlan on February 24, 1962. While in Harlan, Anna babysat for over 70 different families in the area.
Anna enjoyed spending time outside with her flowers and her garden which she was very proud of and also doing embroidery. She also was a great cook and spent many hours in the kitchen preparing family dinners.
Anna was an active member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Katherine #266 of Earling, Iowa.
Anna died on Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Josie Harper Residence Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska; having attained the age of ninety-two years, two months, and twenty-eight days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Peter; her daughter-in-law Wanda (Mrs. Cyril) Schmieding; her siblings: Margaret, John Jr.; Clara; Dorothy; Rita; Alphonse; Norbert; and two brothers and two sisters in infancy.
She is survived by her children: Peter Schmieding and his wife Barbara of Imperial, Missouri; Sister Mary Ann Schmieding, OSF of Omaha, Nebraska; Francis Schmieding of Columbia, South Carolina; Cyril Schmieding and his wife Velva and Bill Schmieding and his wife Pat all of Omaha, Nebraska; and Michael Schmieding and his wife Wanda of Kansas City, Kansas; nine grandchildren: Mark, Steven, Amy, Tony, Michelle, Todd, Jaymie, Scott, Tom and Tim; nine great-grandchildren: Connor, Rachel, Logan, Colton, Aiden, Brayden, Kierra, Regan, and Parker; her sister Madonna Nielsen of San Angelo, Texas; her aunt Hilda Majerus of Sibley, Iowa; nieces; nephews; other family members and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the School Sisters of St. Francis Retirement Fund or New Cassel Foundation.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at New Cassel Chapel in Omaha, Nebraska. Rev. Dominic Mainelli celebrated the 11:00 AM service. A graveside service was held at 3:00 PM on Saturday at St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa, with Rev. Bob Hoefler celebrating. Serving as casket bearers were Tim Schmieding, Steve Schmieding, Tom Schmieding, Mark Schmieding, Scott Schmieding, Todd Schmieding, and Tony Schmieding.
