Arlene Romancy Krogstad was born on December 23, 1916 to Herbert and Laura (Lundby) Escher on a farm near Tennant, Iowa. After graduating from Tennant High School, she entered nurses’ training at Immanuel Swedish Lutheran Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. She graduated with the Class of 1939 and began employment at the original Harlan Hospital where she particularly liked assisting in the surgery department.
On August 24, 1940, Arlene was united in marriage to Al Krogstad at the Escher family farm. There were three sons born to them: Richard, Larry, and Roger. They resided in Elk Horn, Iowa, for four years before moving to Harlan, Iowa, where they spent thirty-eight years until retiring to Sun Lakes, Arizona in 1982.
Arlene and Al lived very full and active lives, filled with work, socializing, volunteering, and traveling. After their retirement, while they were both in their seventies, they especially enjoyed taking trips around Arizona on their Honda Aspencade motorcycle.
Arlene’s great resilience in the face of losses and illness, and her seemingly limitless energy was, and will continue to be, an inspiration to her family and friends, even after her death on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. She had attained the age of ninety-nine years, four months, and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her husband Al, grandson David, parents, sisters Margery Baker and Patricia Runyan, and brothers Charles and Robert Escher.
She is survived by her sons: Richard Krogstad and his wife Christine, Larry Krogstad and his wife Sandra, and Roger Krogstad of; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
A private family graveside memorial service will be held at a later date.
