Arlene Ann Reinig was born on October 5, 1923 to Michael and Flora (Stinn) Leinen in Portsmouth, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth where she remained a lifelong member. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated with the Class of 1941.
During World War II, she worked in a bomb factory in Mead, Nebraska until her marriage to Joseph Reinig on May 8, 1946. They became parents to ten children: Betty, Mike, Richard, Laura, Ella, Loretta, Jim, Vince, Dan, and Kathy. She was a homemaker, active with the 4-H Club her children were in, and served on the parish council and the Rosary Society.
Arlene was a strong supporter of Native American organizations. She was in the quilting club, the Portsmouth Coffee Club, as well as a member of the Southside Ladies and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Maria Goretti Court 2498 of Portsmouth, Iowa. She obtained her thirteen gallon blood donor pin from the American Red Cross.
Arlene died at Elm Crest Retirement Community on Monday, January 18, 2016 having attained the age of ninety-two years, three months, and thirteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Marcus and Arthur Leinen, and sisters Rita Stein and Luella Hendricks.
She is survived by her husband of nearly seventy years, Joe S. Reinig of Portsmouth, Iowa; children: Betty and her husband John Kubicek of Omaha, Nebraska, Mike Reinig and his wife Charlotte of Melbourne, Florida, Richard Reinig and his wife Roxanne of Portsmouth, Laura and her husband John Ilcisin of Omaha, Ella and her husband Bob McAlexander of Omaha, Loretta and her husband Adrian Fechner of Blair, Nebraska, Jim Reinig and his wife Chris of Gretna, Nebraska, Vince Reinig and his wife Christy of Mt. Shasta, California, Dan Reinig and his wife Lori of Mulino, Oregon, and Kathy and her husband John Goetz of Ankeny, Iowa; eighteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Robert Leinen and his wife Connie of Persia, Iowa; and sisters: Mary Ellen Reisz of Portsmouth, Cleo and her husband Harold Lefeber of Minden, Iowa, and Lois and her husband Duane Book of Ft. Lupton, Colorado; other family members and friends.
