Arlene Alma Schwery, daughter of Michael and Annabel (Weihs) Schechinger, was born on August 10, 1931 in Westphalia, Iowa. Arlene was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. She attended grade school and graduated from high school at St. Boniface Catholic School in Westphalia.
Arlene was one of nine children and grew up outside of Westphalia. Because of her father�s death when she was twelve, Arlene helped manage the farming responsibilities.
On September 14, 1950, she was united in marriage to Elmer John Schwery at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Six children were born to this union: Charlene, Lynn, Tim, Cheryl, Kelly, and Christi.
From the mid 1960's to 1970's, Arlene managed the hardware store in Westphalia. During this time she began selling carpet. She then began selling carpet from her home until 2002 when she retired. Arlene also enjoyed playing cards, sewing, embroidery, gardening, visiting her children and grandchildren, making chocolate chip cookies, and especially planting flowers. She made five formals for her granddaughter�s weddings. Arlene was an active member of the Rosary Society and a life-long member of St. Boniface Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Governor�s advisory committee.
Arlene died on May 26, 2007, at Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-five years, nine months, and sixteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Charlene Schmidt; three brothers: Elmer, Jim, and Jerry; and one sister, Alice Schomers.
She is survived by her husband, Elmer Schwery of Westphalia, Iowa; her children: Lynn and his wife Ardie Schwery of Ames, Iowa, Tim and his wife Cheryl Schwery of Underwood, Iowa, Cheryl Ronfeldt of Neola, Iowa, Kelly and his wife Sandi Schwery of Westphalia, Iowa, and Christi and her husband Chuck Leinen of Omaha, Nebraska; seventeen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; her brother and sisters: Agnes Wehr of Westphalia; Mike Schechinger and his wife Mary of Westphalia; Jane Ragsdale of Hiram, Georgia and Joyce and her husband Stan Ulmer of Harlan, Iowa; nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa, at 10:30 AM with Rev. John Dorton officiating. Interment was in St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia, Iowa with Jeff Schmidt, Tom Schechinger, Dan Schwery, Galen Pauley, Ken Schechinger, and Dave Schomers serving as casket bearers.
