Ida Arlene Sunderland was born on October 5, 1919 to Hugh and Beulah (Findlay) Patterson in Irwin, Iowa. She attended grade school in Atlantic, Iowa, where the family lived from 1928 to 1934. After moving to the Harlan area, Arlene graduated from Harlan High School with the Class of 1938.
On October 8th of that year, she was united in marriage to Leland Sunderland at the Congregational parsonage. She was a homemaker and stay at home mother, raising her three daughters: Pat, Judy, and Kathy.
She enjoyed reading, playing cards, golfing, traveling, socializing - especially entertaining her family and friends in her home, spending time around the swimming pool, and spending many hours knitting afghans, mittens, baby booties, and sweaters for her family and friends.
Arlene was a lifelong member of the Congregational United Church of Christ where she volunteered on various committees. She was also a member of the Myrtue Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Order of Rainbow for Girls and was Harlan’s first Worthy Advisor, The Flames, and volunteered at the Harlan Bloodmobile.
Arlene died on Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Elm Crest Retirement Home, having attained the age of ninety-five years, seven months, and twenty-three days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Kathy Baldwin, brother Floyd Patterson, grandson Kevin Ahrenholtz, and great-granddaughter Samantha Ahrenholtz.
She is survived by her daughters Pat and her husband Ron Mosher of Harlan, Iowa and Judy and her husband Denny Storm also of Harlan; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; other family members and friends.
