Arlene Zacharias was born to Lawrence and Marie (Patten) Goeser on December 20, 1940 in Harlan, Iowa. She attended grade school and high school at St. Boniface in Westphalia, Iowa, where she graduated in 1960. She grew up a tomboy. Arlene was known for working and playing in the dirt on her family’s farm. She was very protective of her younger siblings.
Arlene found the love of her life when she met Herman Zacharias. After getting married, the two made their home in Persia, Iowa. Herman served as the post master and Arlene worked wherever she could for the city of Persia. She loved mowing at the city park and the Valley View Cemetery. She also served as an EMT for many years and helped work on the old school in Tennant, Iowa when it was being converted into a furniture manufacturing factory.
Arlene’s favorite place to be was outdoors. She loved being an aunt and entertaining her nieces and nephews. Arlene was very caring. She stayed with and helped take care of her Grandma Goeser. She was very mechanically inclined and loved riding and working on her motorcycle. Arlene was very particular in her work. Even after she retired, she kept an eye on the city park and cemetery.
Arlene passed away on May 14, 2024 in Persia, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Marie Goeser; her husband, Herman Zacharias; siblings, Marvin, Gary, and Allen.
She is survived by her sisters, Theresa (Denny) Holtz of Walnut, IA and Karen Hess of Dunlap, IA; several nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
