Arthur Ben Linde was born on February 18, 1923 to William and Angie (Auen) Linde in Botna, Iowa. He was baptized at Wheatland Presbyterian Church and attended Botna Country School. Art graduated from Manilla High School with the Class of 1941.
He was united in marriage to Docia Ann Chambers on November 7, 1948 at Bethel Baptist Church in Harlan, Iowa. Four children were born to this union: Mary Ann, William, Robert, and James.
Art farmed for several years. He was a handy man and worked as a carpenter, custom sprayer, plumber, and electrician. He did various jobs around the area for many people who started as employers and became his friends. After they moved to town, Art had a tomato patch that he cared for. He enjoyed eating his tomatoes almost as much as he enjoyed growing them and giving them away.
Art enjoyed playing card games and socializing with his family and many friends. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Art died on Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, having attained the age of eighty-eight years, two months, and twenty days. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Laura Schulz, and brothers Marvin, Raymon, and Elmer.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years Docia Linde of Harlan, Iowa; daughter Mary Ann and her husband Rick Neppl of Charter Oak, Iowa; sons: William Linde and his wife Jean, Robert Linde and his wife Kim, and James Linde all of Glidden, Iowa; eleven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; other family members and friends.
Pastor Joe Earle officiated the 10:30 AM funeral service on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Scott Hansen, Todd Ahrenholtz, Josh Schramm, Kyle Linde, Stan Knudsen, Mike Sease, Brandt Walsh, Mark Winker, John Linde, and Andy Cote. Interment was held at the Harlan Cemetery.
