Arthur Masur
January 24, 1929 — May 17, 2012
Arthur Paul Masur, Jr. was born on January 24, 1929 to Arthur and Mildred (Winkler) Masur in Lockhart, Texas. He attended school and graduated from Lockhart High School. After graduating, Arthur went to work for the Coca Cola Company where he drove a truck route. During this time he entered the National Guard.
While in the National Guard, Arthur was drafted into the 40th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army at Camp Cook, California. This is where he met Leo Hahn from Earling, Iowa. They both served in Korea together. After being injured in Korea and receiving a purple heart, Arthur returned to California, where he received his honorable discharge.
After his discharge, Arthur returned to Lockhart, Texas where he went to work for his parents company. The family business was later sold and Arthur began working as the water plant operator in Lockhart, Texas.
Art then made a trip to Iowa where he wanted to catch up on past times with his Army buddy, Leo Hahn. They planned a trip to West Bend, Iowa to see the famous Grotto. Leo and his wife Rosemary also brought her sister, Mary Bernice Green. Mary and Arthur began a correspondence after he returned to Texas and after a short courtship the two were united in marriage on October 21, 1983 at St. Peter�s Catholic Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home in Lockhart, Texas.
In May of 2009, they then made their home in Harlan, Iowa and this has been their home since. Art died on May 17, 2012 at the Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan having attained the age of eighty-three years, three months and twenty-three days. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Masur. He is survived by his wife Mary Bernice Masur of Harlan; his sisters: Millie Murray of Modesto, California and Norma Baker of Lockhart, Texas; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends.
Rev. John Frost celebrated the 10:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, May 21, 2012 at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa. Serving as casket bearers were Bob Green, Mike Hahn, Tom Green, Jim Hahn, Arlan Christensen, and Joe Hahn. Military Rites were performed by American Legion Post No. 330 at St. Patrick�s Cemetery in Neola, Iowa.
