Belva Langer Hansen died on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at the Avoca Nursing and Rehab Center in Avoca, Iowa. She had attained the age of ninety six years, three months and twenty-one days.
Belva was born January 1, 1912 in Minden, Iowa to Kate (Haas) and Peter Langer, Jr. She was the second of four children and grew up in Minden. At the age of seven her parents died of the Spanish influenza and she was raised by her Grandmother Haas. Belva was confirmed in the Minden Congregational Church and graduated from Minden High School with the Class of 1929. After graduation she worked in various households and on December 2, 1931 she married Wilbert Hansen of Avoca.
Belva and Wilbert lived on a Langer farm south of Minden for awhile but later moved to a farm east of Corley, Iowa. They were the parents of five children, three of whom died in infancy. In the 1940's Wilbert and Belva lived in various Kansas locations as Wilbert worked in construction. In 1945 they returned to Avoca to live, where Belva had jobs at several local cafes.
In the 1950's Belva worked as a telephone operator until Avoca went to dial up. She also worked during the early 1960's as a cook in the Avoca schools. Belva was instrumental in helping her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Roger Kubik get into the restaurant business. She worked at Kubiks Kitchen and later at the Villager in Walnut, Iowa. She was always ready to help her children and grandchildren in their projects and businesses. Belva loved working and meeting people in the restaurant business. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.
Belva was preceded in death by her parents in 1918; her husband Wilbert in 1972; three children: Wilbert, Jr., Kenneth and Karol; two grandchildren, Tracy and Scott Kubik; her brothers, Milton and Chester Langer and her sister, Bernadette Stroebele.
She is survived by her daughters: Barbara (Mrs. Robert) Brown and Betty (Mrs. Roger Kubik), all of Avoca; her grandchildren: Wanda Schuler of Red Bluff, California, Janet (Mrs. Alan) Graham of Avoca; Kerri Connell of Omaha, Nebraska and Angela (Mrs. James) Dimmitt of Hamlin, Iowa; five great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 10:30 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, Iowa with Pastor Dennis Reich as the clergy. Serving as casket bearers were Dan Connell, Alan Graham, Jeremiah Thompson, James Dimmitt, Ryan Graham and John Stroebele. Interment was held at the Graceland Cemetery, Avoca, Iowa
