Bernadine Ann Hayes, daughter of Leo and Louisa (Schmitz) Pauley, was born on June 2, 1930, in Panama, Iowa. She was baptized, confirmed, and attended school at St. Mary�s of the Assumption Catholic Church in Panama. On June 7, 1950, Bernadine was united in marriage to Charles Hayes at St. Mary�s in Panama. Five children were born to this union: Marcia, Phyllis, Daniel, Janelle, and Patricia.
They made their home in Lincoln Township and then Portsmouth before moving back to Lincoln Township to Chuck�s family farm.
Bernadine worked at Myrtue Memorial Hospital from 1959 to 1987 as a nurse�s assistant, ward clerk and pharmacy technician before she became a home health aid where she worked until 2007 when her health began to fail.
Bernadine was a long-time parishioner of St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth where she was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Maria Goretti No. 2498 of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Portsmouth Community Choir and the St. Mary�s Church Choir.
Bernadine died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, surrounded by her family having attained the age of seventy-seven years, ten months, and thirteen days. She is preceded in death by her parents; her brothers Jerry and Walter; her sister Thelma; her grandson Christopher Allen and great-granddaughter Ashley Shropshire.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Chuck Hayes of Portsmouth, Iowa; their children: Marcia Nelson of Kimballton, Iowa; Phyllis Allen and Dan Hayes both of Harlan, Iowa; Janelle Christensen and her special friend Nick Journigan of Maryville, Missouri; and Patricia Hayes of Harlan; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; her siblings: Lucille Wendt of Woodbine, Iowa; Alfred Pauley and his wife Prune of Panama, Iowa; Mary Ella and her husband Gary Wilke and Janice and her husband Gerald Waltz all of Portsmouth, Iowa; and Kenneth Pauley and his wife Eileen of Panama; nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 19, 2008 at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Rev. John Dorton officiated the 10:00 AM service with burial at St. Mary�s Cemetery in Portsmouth. Serving as casket bearers were: Paul Waltz, Dennis Wilke, Bill Wendt, Kerry Pauley, Jerry Pauley, and Chuck Wendt.
