Bernice Irene Weihs, born April 9, 1920 was the daughter of Catherine Stinn and Tony Weihs. She was united in marriage to Francis Henry Anastasi, born Feb 19, 1915, son of Henry Anastasi and Theresa VonTersh on Feb 5, 1940 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Harlan Iowa.

Francis and Bernice farmed near Harlan Iowa until their retirement in 1976 at which time they moved into the town of Harlan.

In April 1948, Francis and Bernice, opened their hearts and home and became parents to a son they named Dennis Lee born April 19, 1948 and three years later to a daughter they named Vicki Ann, born Aug 10, 1951.

Dennis married Mary Ann Feser on Aug 29, 1970 and are parents to 3 children; Jason, Jared, and Joseph.

Vicki married Ken Bruck on Sept 12, 1970 and are parents to 3 children: Troy, Amy, and Todd.

Bernice was a loving daughter, wife and mother. She was a caregiver, a very gracious lady and had many friends. She was a member of St. Michaels Guild for many years. But most of all she was a faithful servant to our Lord Jesus Christ.

She enjoyed gardening, planting flowers, cooking and baking for her family and most of all her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She didn’t focus on elaborate or expensive things. She was content and satisfied with what she did have. Instead she focused on what she believed were most important in her life; family, friends and her strong faith in God.

In 1969, Francis and Bernice opened their hearts and home and became foster parents. First to Randy Terrill and later to a family of three children: Ruth, Roxanne and Clarence Hull.

One April 9, 1986, Francis died due to serious complications with diabetes and heart disease. Due to Bernice’s strong faith in God during this difficult time, she was able to enjoy life again. She continued to travel, even to Europe, gardening, card clubs and road trips to the cassinos with her brother, Louis.

She was able to live in her home until Nov 2010 at which time she moved to the Little Flower Haven in Earling Iowa where she had the loving care of her grandaughter Amy Hoffmann until Jan 31, 2015. She was tranferred to Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan where passed away on February 2, 2015 at the age of 94 years, 9 months, and 24 days.

When Vicki asked her mom in her last years if she had a happy life, Bernice replied “I have nothing to complain about” That, in essence, was Bernice. She handled her trials as the best she could and the rest she handed over to God.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis, Her parents, Tony and Catherine Weihs of Harlan, her brother, Alfred Weihs who died in WW2 and her brother Louis Weihs of Harlan. Her sister, Edna Wiehs of Harlan and Mariyln Williamson of Cape Canerval, FL. Her parents in laws, Henry and Theresa Anastasi. Her brothers and sisters in laws, Oscar and Evelyn Anastasi of Harlan, Omar and Corrine Anastasi of Harlan Iowa. Jerald and Angeline Anastasi of California. Dick and Charlette Anastasi of Austin, TX. Al and Maryalyce Thomas of Chicago Ill. and Ted Anastasi of Harlan.

She is survived by her son Dennis (Mary Ann) Anastasi of Defiance IA. Vicki Bruck of Harlan IA. Six grandchildren; Troy Bruck, Amy (Bruck) Hoffmann, Todd Bruck, Jason Anastasi, Jared Anastasi, Joseph Anastasi and 15 great grand children. Her brother Wilfred (Joann) Weihs of Harlan IA. Sister Rita (Jack) Claussen of Harlan and sister Jo (Mike) Kostenecki of Boise, ID sister in law, Martha Anastasi of Harlan IA. Many nieces and nephews and friends.
