Bernice Elizabeth Ehlers, daughter of Adolph and Dorthea (Groepper) Ehlers, was born on February 21, 1922 in Minden, Iowa. She graduated from Lexington High School and then went to beauty school in Des Moines. While in beauty school she lived with her sister Alma. She was a longtime member of Shelby Presbyterian Church.
After beauty school, Bernice would follow construction jobs between WWI and WWII. She would rent farms in Western Iowa and Eastern Nebraska. Her career settled in downtown Omaha owning her own Salon. This is where she was introduced to Leo Zareski. Although never married, the two purchased a farm outside of Shelby, Iowa. Leo was diagnosed with Leukemia and only lived a short 6 months. Bernice remained on the farm until 2010, then she moved to Elm Crest in Harlan. She loved to sightsee and work.
On Friday, October 9, 2020, Bernice passed away at Elm Crest Senior Living in Harlan having attained the age of ninety-eight years, seven months and eighteen days. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters Helen, Alma and Yvonne. Left to cherish her memory are her nephew Roger (Brenda) Dollen of Avoca, Iowa; niece Darla (Randy) Mills of Houston, Texas.
