Bernice Wilhelmina Mordhorst, daughter of Frank and Margaret (Haferbier) Wiese, was born August 3rd, 1914. She was baptized, received her First Communion and was confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Portsmouth, Iowa. Attended country school in Harrison County. She is a member of St. Michael’s Church in Harlan, Iowa.
On February 17, 1936, she was married to Herbert Gubbels at St. Mary’s Church of Portsmouth, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. A daughter; Norma Jean and son; Marlin. They spent their married life on a farm south of Portsmouth.
Herbert passed away in July 1965. She then moved to Harlan, Iowa where she was employed at Farner’s Variety Store from 1966 to 1980.
On April 22, 1972; Bernice was united in marriage to Walter Mordhorst. They were married at St. Patrick’s Church in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They made their home in Harlan for over 40 years.
Bernice enjoyed cooking and baking. Mother made the best homemade cinnamon rolls and also loved to crochet for her grandchildren. She also crochet a beautiful tablecloth and many doilies over the years.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband; Walter Mordhorst in 2012; and brother Francis Wiese.
She is survived by her daughter, Norma Jean Winn and husband, Dale of Westminster, California; son, Marlin Gubbels and his partner Kathy Bunda of Fort Dodge, Iowa; grandchildren Karla Elliott; Jennifer Freihage; Krista Gubbels; Megan Gubbels; Greg Gubbels; Steve Winn; Sharon Forman; 13 great-grandchildren, plus many nieces, nephews and friends.
Bernice W. Mordhorst entered rest on Monday November 13, 2017 in Elk Horn, Iowa at Salem Lutheran Homes.
