Bernice Clara Rueschenberg was born on August 28, 1932 to Anton and Elizabeth (Bock) Kloewer in Westphalia, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia and attended St. Boniface Catholic School, graduating with the Class of 1950.
On May 12, 1953, Bernice was united in marriage to Harold Rueschenberg in Westphalia. Five children were born to this union: Robert, Debra, Lois, Joyce, and John. Bernice was a stay at home mom and kept busy with the children�s activities. She coached the CYO girls softball and umpired after her retirement from coaching.
Bernice worked as a custodian for St. Boniface Parish for many years and was an active member of the Rosary Society. Her hobbies included bowling, quilting, gardening, and reading.
Bernice died on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Little Flower Haven Nursing Home in Earling, Iowa, having attained the age of seventy-eight years, six months, and two days. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anton and Elizabeth; husband Harold; sisters Viola and Agnes and brother Walter.
She is survived by her children: Robert Rueschenberg of Westphalia, Iowa, Debra Rueschenberg and partner Gail of San Antonio, Texas, Lois and her husband Dave Mahlberg of Denison, Iowa, Joyce and her husband Billy Misner of Elk Horn, Iowa, and John Rueschenberg of Bluemont, Virginia; six grandchildren: Jacob, Karley, Justin, Amanda, Jill, and Kevin; six great-grandchildren: Kaitlynne, Sheldon, Evan, Kolten, Maxwell, and Elise; brothers Norbert "Nub" Kloewer and his wife Pat and Leo "Spike" Kloewer and his wife Alice all of Harlan, Iowa; sisters Leona Klein and Betty Specht both of Westphalia; other family members and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. John Dorton at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia, Iowa. Serving as honorary casket bearers were Maxwell Hanson, Evan Hill, Kaitlynne Davis, Sheldon Hill, Elise Hanson and Kolten Hill while serving as casket bearers were Kevin Mahlberg, Jacob Henriksen, Doug Kloewer, Matt Hill, Justin Henriksen and James Davis. Private inurnment was held on Monday, March 7, 2011 at the St. Boniface Cemetery in Westphalia.
