Bernice Buman Schomer was born on June 14, 1914, in rural Tennant, Iowa, to John and Helen (Rosman) Buman. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary Our Lady of Fatima in Portsmouth, Iowa. She attended grade school and graduated from high school in Tennant, Iowa. She went on to attend college at St. Mary�s, Notre Dame in Indiana, and Duschene in Omaha, Nebraska. After completing her education, she taught third and fourth grades in Tennant, Iowa, for six years, until her marriage.
She was united in marriage to Joseph Schomer on June 22, 1943, at St. Mary�s Catholic Church in Portsmouth, Iowa. There were six children born to this union: Joe Jr., Mary, Rose, Pat, Kathleen, and Stephan. She was a very loving mother and mentor to her children and was involved in her children�s activities. She was a 4-H leader for the Lincoln Bluebirds. She taught religious education at St. Michael�s Catholic Church, read to the residents at Elm Crest Retirement Center, and served on the Community Chest Board.
Bernice loved to sew and made special cross-stitches for the Baptisms, First Communions and Marriages of her grandchildren. She loved flowers of all kinds and spent many hours in her gardens. Bernice was a particularly good cook and baker. Her sweet rolls and bread were sought after by her family and friends. Joe and Bernice lived on the family farm until 1999 when they moved into Harlan.
Bernice died on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, having attained the age of ninety-two years, seven months, and twenty-four days. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Helen Buman, and her siblings: Edwin Buman, Corrine Anastasi, Wanda Jurshack, and Kenneth Buman.
Bernice is survived by her husband of sixty-four years, Joseph Schomer, her children: Joe Schomer, Jr. of Daytona Beach, Florida, Mary and her husband Myron Goodman of Salisbury, North Carolina, Rose and her husband Kenneth Nielsen of LaCanada, California, Pat and her husband Mike Laas of Bettendorf, Iowa, Kathleen Kohorst of Harlan, Iowa, and Stephan and his wife Tammy Schomer of Iowa City, Iowa, nineteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at 10:00 AM at St. Michael�s Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa with Rev. Robert Hoefler as the Celebrant. Serving as casket bearers were John Kohorst, Myron Joseph Goodman, Jr., Molly Laas, Buck Bucholz, David Schomer and Joe Schomer III. Interment was held in the St. Boniface Cemetery, Westphalia, Iowa.
