Bernice Woltmann, daughter of Carl and Elsie (Dollen) Kubelck, was born January 13, 1924 on a farm outside of Shelby, Iowa. Growing up she attended Shelby Consolidated School in Shelby, Iowa. Throughout high school, she was a member of Girls Glee Club, mixed chorus group, played the saxophone in band, pep band, marching band and orchestra, and had parts in the Junior and Senior plays. She graduated from Shelby High School with the class of 1942. Bernice furthered her education in business clerical at Burroughs Machine School in Omaha, Nebraska.
On November 10, 1945, Bernice was united in marriage to Norman Woltmann at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa. The couple made their home in Avoca, Iowa where she worked at Peterson Grocery as a clerk and cashier then a teller at Citizen’s Savings Bank. They moved to Reno, Nevada for a few years until her mother became ill and she moved back to Iowa to care for them. In later years, she worked as a bookkeeper for Piitmann Seed Company and an Office Manager for Lake Candlewood Apartments in Omaha, Nebraska. She spent many years working at Nelsen Mini Mart in Avoca.
Bernice was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Avoca, she served as Financial Secretary and Treasurer on two year terms. She always had a love for music and Big Band music. She also enjoyed dancing, bowling, and playing bridge.
Bernice passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018 surrounded by her loving family and friends at Avoca Specialty Care in Avoca, Iowa, attaining the age of ninety-four years, seven months, and eighteen days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Norman Woltmann, sister Irene and Virgil Turk and brother Vern and Maxine Kubelck.
She has left to cherish her memory, her nieces Virgilene Koenig of Papillion, Nebraska; Connie Wise of Avoca, Iowa; Karen Larson and her husband Dave of McClelland, Iowa; Pat Calkins and her husband Jim of Cheyenne, Wyoming; many great nieces and nephews; great-great nieces and nephews; great-great-great nieces and nephews; other family members and many friends.
