Bernie E Mann, son of Wilma Hull and Bernard Mann, was born on March 23, 1931, in Treynor, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at a church in Treynor and graduated from Treynor High School with the class of 1949. After graduation, Bernie attended Iowa State University and majored in Ag Education, was member of the fraternity Phi Gamma Delta and received a Bachelor's degree in 1953.
Bernie met Lorraine Childs in high school and the two married on April 12, 1955, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. To this union two sons were born: Brett and Bruce. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1953 and was a Pilot and a flight instructor. Bernie was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1957.
Bernie and Lorraine were long time members of the United Church of Avoca. After the Navy, Bernie started farming and retired in 1988. He then drove truck for Anderson Grain Company. He was a member of Mount Nebo Lodge in Avoca, a member of the Fred Funston American Legion Post No. 227 in Avoca, and was an avid golfer in his prime, and even hit a hole in one.
On Monday, February 21, 2022, Bernie passed away at the Avoca Specialty Care Center having attained the age of 90 years, 10 months and 29 days. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Lorraine in 2018. Left to cherish his memory are his sons Brett Mann of Humble, Texas; Bruce Mann of Avoca, Iowa; sister JoAnn Thompson of Boulder, Colorado; and many friends.
